Bell and Howell CEO Ramesh Ratan to Address Postal Delivery Monopoly at PostalVision 2020/7.0

Will Explore Similarities with Breakup of Telecommunications Monopolies

Durham, N.C., March 16, 2017 – Ramesh L. Ratan, CEO of Bell and Howell, will discuss the future of the U.S. postal monopoly on Wednesday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at the PostalVision 2020/7.0 conference in Arlington, Virginia. Ratan will be part of panel session titled “Delivery By Design – Monopoly Review” moderated by Lori Rectanus, director of public infrastructure at the Government Accountability Office. Ratan will be joined in the panel discussion by Robert Taub, chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission, and David Williams, former inspector general of the United States Postal Service.

This year’s PostalVision 2020 conference, themed “Business NOT As Usual,” will focus on new and changing business models in the global postal ecosystem in the new digital economy.

For his contribution to the panel, Ratan will draw from his years of experience in the telecommunications industry to show parallels between the breakup of telecom monopolies and the erosion of the postal mailbox monopoly.

“The United States Postal Service holds a legal monopoly over various elements of mail delivery, including the mailbox. This prevents technology and business entrepreneurs from investing and competing in the postal industry to create new sources of value for senders, receivers and its employees,” said Ratan. “Meanwhile, First Class letter mail volume has plunged with the shift to electronic communications and payments, while parcel and package volumes have grown, pushed by the dramatic rise of e-commerce. We need creative solutions that improve the overall viability of our critical postal infrastructure as well as the long-term health of USPS.”

The PostalVision 2020 Initiative is an independent, inclusive and strictly non-partisan forum that is reinventing the American postal ecosystem of the future. The group’s mission is to serve as “an independent transformative cause that inspires imaginative thinking, stimulates provocative conversation and influences the reinvention of American Postal Services in 2020 and beyond.”
