Direct mail marketing is getting more personal, more real, and more effective thanks to affordable, high-quality digital printing and technologies that simplify integration into a multi-channel campaign. 

According to the United States Postal Service, 57 percent of all the mail pieces in the U.S. is attributed to direct mail marketing, representing approximately $9.4 billion in direct mail spending on print and mail services and postage.

Bell and Howell wanted to better understand the impact that this has on the value chain that serves this market by focusing on a specific segment of the broader printing industry – direct mail marketing service providers.

The starting point in Bell and Howell's research was the 2016 "Printing Impressions 400", issued in December 2016. It ranks commercial printers by annual revenue and includes share of revenue attributed to direct mail operations. Bell and Howell compiled the list using publically available information and its own primary research to create the ranking based on estimated revenue from companies’ direct mail operations. The research was led by Bell and Howell’s Senior Director Haroon Abbu , Ph.D.
